The names of them sound very similar, but from the working principle, materials, application industries and so on, we can see that there is not much connection between the two. The main feature of laser welding is that the high energy density of the laser can be used to achieve local or micro-area heating to complete the welding process. The key to laser welding is the reasonable control of laser power distribution. Although both use a laser beam as a heat source, there are technical differences.
Laser soldering is a kind of laser processing. It uses the laser as a heating source to radiantly heat the leads (or the connection pads of leadless devices), and transfers the heat to the substrate through a special solder for laser soldering (laser solder paste/solder wire or prefabricated solder pads). When the temperature reaches the melting point of the solder, the solder melts and the substrate and leads are wetted by the solder to form a solder joint. Laser welding uses high-energy laser pulses to locally heat the material in a small area. The energy of the laser radiation is diffused into the material by heat conduction and the material is melted to form a specific molten pool.

Laser soldering machines are suitable for materials such as post inserts, soldering of temperature sensitive components, soldering of difficult components, micro speakers/motors, SMT post soldering of various PCB's, cell phone components, and so on.
Laser welding machines are suitable for welding materials such as mold steel, carbon steel, alloy steel, stainless steel, copper and copper alloys, aluminum and aluminum alloys, plastics and so on.
Laser soldering machine is mainly used in precision processing of electronics industry, such as spot welding of PCB, brazing, spot welding and stack welding of electronic connectors and thermal components. It is also suitable for microelectronics, such as welding of very fine coaxial wires and terminals, USB flat cable welding, flexible circuit board FPC or rigid circuit PCB welding, high-precision LCD, TFT welding, high-frequency transmission lines and so on.
